Holiday Packages
Ten Yad’s Holiday Package programme is designed to bring some holiday joy to Jewish residents in non-Jewish Ottawa-area long term care and retirement homes, as well as to Jewish patients in hospitals and other facilities.
At any given time, over 150 members of Ottawa’s Jewish community are residing in non-Jewish facilities across the city or are patients in hospitals. For the most part, the number of Jewish community members in each facility is small and, consequently, the residents are not typically offered much in the way of traditional Jewish holiday programming. Feelings of isolation and lack of connection to the community may be felt most acutely at holiday time.
This programme aims to enhance each recipient’s holiday experience with a holiday-specific gift bag, reminding them that they are remembered and valued by the Jewish community. The holiday packages are delivered for the holidays of Rosh Hashanah, Chanukah, Purim and Pesach.
Ten Yad’s Holiday Package programme is undertaken in partnership with Congregation Machzikei Hadas, and with the cooperation and support of over 80 care homes, seniors’ residences and hospitals across Ottawa. It is funded by generous community-minded donors and only possible due to dedicated volunteers.
